A review of the Sofabaton U1 Universal Remote Control

Home entertainment systems have evolved over the years, and it seems like every manufacturer wants to make their product a bit better than the last. Most of the time the manufacturers are able to do this by way of the addition of extra features, usually within a device. Most often, these features are meant to make the experience of using the device more enjoyable. The most obvious example of this is the remote control, which has become a very important part of home entertainment.

With the advent of the internet, it has become very easy to control almost any piece of home entertainment equipment through the internet. This has resulted in the creation of various apps for smartphones, tablets, and even smart TVs. The Sofabaton U1 Universal Remote is a simple device that makes this process a lot easier. It is also one of the best remote controls on the market today.

If you are looking for a remote control that can be used for a wide variety of devices, then this is definitely one to consider. It is an extremely versatile device, and it will work with virtually any device that has a Wi-Fi connection. It is especially effective for those who use smart TVs.

Sofabaton U1 Universal Remote: Features

A quick-start guide is included, along with the remote and AA batteries. The remote measures 8″ long, 2″ wide, and 1″ thick. On the underside, there are three ergonomic finger grooves so you can hold the remote comfortably.

Among the top features are the TV power button, 1-1/4 inch LCD screen, scroll wheel, input selector, menu, home, and info keys, volume, and channel adjustments, navigation keys, mute, back, rewind and fast forward, play/pause, rec, stop, four color-coded keys, and the 10 digits, dash, and E keys.

The keys on this remote can all be customized, so just because they have a symbol or value on them doesn’t mean you have to use them for that. In the back, you’ll find the IR blaster at the top and the batteries for the remote at the bottom.

Sofabaton U1 Universal Remote: Set up

Upon installation of the batteries, the LCD will prompt you to connect to the Sofabaton app. If your smartphone does not have Bluetooth enabled, the app will prompt you to turn it on when you open it. Once the pairing prompt appears, press and hold the dash and “E” keys on the remote control.

With the Sofabaton U1, you can program your existing remotes. For example, Fire TV has an icon under the popular devices section. You will be guided through the process of adding the remote’s functions to your U1 using the app. If the signals don’t work, test them, or manually program the remote functions by selecting the device type and brand. You can switch between your devices by scrolling the selector wheel on the U1 once your devices are saved.

Once your devices are saved to the U1, the U1 will display their names on the OLED screen. There is little to no delay in the response time and accuracy of the button presses on the U1 for each remote control. All the features of the original remote are present on the Fire TV except for the voice command button, which won’t work since the U1 doesn’t have a microphone. Alternatively, if you already have an Echo device that can control your Fire TV, then this is moot.

Sofabaton U1 Universal Remote: Performance

Universal remote

Although time-consuming, manually adding remotes that are not in the device list is easy. If you are programming a button, sometimes it won’t sync. This could be due to the IR blasters not pointing at each other, being too close together, or being too far away from each other.

To make programming a bit easier, I played a bit with the position of the remotes and found it helped with transferring the signal between them. It is also possible to customize the buttons to perform new functions, such as performing a series of commands in a recorded macro or issuing a command to a different device.

Almost any device using a remote can be programmed into the U1, including sound systems, air conditioners, lights, and even toys.

The Sofabaton lets me control my sound system, Fire TV, projector, and more, all from one remote. It’s so convenient! With the U1, you can store up to 15 devices, and the LCD automatically illuminates when you pick up the remote.

Pros Cons
Can be used with many devices. Expensive
Versatile
Easy to program.

Final Verdict

In general, the Sofabaton U1 was easy to set up and straightforward to program, and it works well to help you minimize and organize the number of remotes that you have to handle. Since I’ve had it, I’ve only lost connection once, but I was able to reconnect it easily. However, the IR beam is narrower than that of some of the original remotes, so for some devices, I found I needed to have a very clear line of sight to the controlled device’s IR receiver. The rest of the time, I haven’t encountered any problems. Fewer remotes also mean fewer batteries.
