The Sony UBP-X800M2, which has now been available for a couple of years, is an entry-level 4K and HDR Blu-ray player. It is a positive development since it means that this player has been updated to make it more powerful.
Even though this Blu-ray player makes our list of the best Blu-ray players, remember that despite its negatives, it is still one of the very best players available right now.
This player is very capable of playing Blu-ray discs and CDs as well as streaming via Netflix and YouTube apps. The 4K and HDR quality are kept at their highest with this player. However, that price still means some sacrifices as it is mid-range. Luckily, these compromises only appear at the top-end of image quality reproduction, so if you are looking for a reasonably priced player, this may be right for you.
Sony UBP-X800M2 review: Picture quality
- 4K image quality
- HDR10 and Dolby Vision
A player of this caliber produces the kind of rich, vibrant image one would hope for. The X800 has advanced significantly since the first generation, and the leap forward is obvious.
When watching a 4K Blu-ray in HDR10 or Dolby Vision, the colors are lifelike and the images are fast. Filmmakers would likely be proud of the depth and clarity of the image. There are no visible distortions.
While Dolby Vision adds dynamism to movies, it may be a bit overdone for some. The Dolby Vision mode pushes a little too far towards over-punchy at times, as Sony is known for keeping things subtle.
Apart from that, this image is full of fine detail with no processing noise and a lot of nuanced colors. It also works well for upscaled 1080p to 4K, indicating Sony’s deep experience in this area.
Sony UBP-X800M2 review: Audio quality
- Excellent audio output options
- Natural sound
In addition to supporting hi-resolution sources and DVD-Audio, this deck offers support for SACD. In combination with a decent audio system, the player will ensure that the speakers are working to their maximum potential to deliver the best possible sound.
It boosts the richness and dynamic nature of compressed audio content with DSEE HX. It is a superb way to restore the best possible results to your ears from audio files that have been heavily compressed.
There will be plenty of natural sound with clear dialogue, which will really immerse you into whatever it is you’re watching.
Design, build, and features
- High build quality
- Apps including Netflix
- Support for Bluetooth headphones
The Sony UBP-X800M2 features a solid build, nearly identical to its highest-end counterpart which is almost double the price. Despite its compact form, it’s made from quality materials, with a majority of the frame being metal. This is done by Sony to ensure minimal warping, and so that the inside of the player remains as stable as possible, regardless of vibrations from outside.
The front has no screen, and all that black metal is interrupted by only two buttons for power and eject. On the back, you will find dual HDMI, optical, and wired LAN internet ports.
This remote control looks like a large Sony with colored buttons and a Netflix button. Even in the dark, everything works smoothly.
With regards to apps, this offers Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube with support for 4K and HDR. The downside to all of these services is that HDR10+ and Dolby Vision aren’t supported. At this price point, you shouldn’t have to manually turn on Dolby Vision even when it is supported.
The Bluetooth connectivity feature is also noteworthy. Using Bluetooth headphones, you can watch without experiencing any lag or synchronization issues.
|Decent build||No automatic Dolby Vision switching|
|HDR10 quality||No HDR10+ support|
With the Sony UBP-X800M2, you’ll get the top-end build, high-end features, and an affordable price. Despite the outstanding image and audio quality, the need to manually turn on Dolby Vision and the lack of HDR10+ support may be a concern for some. Anyone looking to play Blu-ray discs, high-resolution audio, and CD and DVD content with upscaling will find this a very powerful option.
